DATA RESOURCES

Spatial and Numeric Data Services, located in the Taylor Family Digital Library at the University of Calgary, provides access to cartographic materials, GIS and statistical data and software. They can also assist with finding resources both within and outside our collection.

UN-Habitat Urban Data is open source data from countries and cities around the globe. The urban indicators data available is analyzed, compiled, and published by UN-Habitat's Global Urban Observatory which supports governments, local authorities, and civil society organizations. Urban statistics are collected through household surveys and censuses conducted by national statistics authorities.

CANSIM is Statistics Canada's key socioeconomic database. Updated daily, CANSIM provides fast and easy access to a large range of the latest statistics available in Canada. Much of this data can be aggregated to the provincial and municipal level.

The Alberta Government's Open Data website features a variety of datasets on subjects such as the environment, health and wellness, and population and demography, particularly for the province's major urban centres.

The City of Calgary's Open Data Catalogue includes data sets from various business units and departments. These data sets are available in multiple file formats (e.g. spatial data) and anyone can download the data sets at no charge.

The CHASS Data Center is a data resource housed in the University of Toronto, to which University of Calgary students have access as affiliates. These resources include a census analyzer, a trade analyzer, financial market information, historical censuses, and data aggregated to scales not regularly provided to the public. You must be within the University of Calgary online network to access these resources (e.g. the library).

The Prairie Regional Research Data Centre Network is housed on campus at the University of Calgary and provides access to micro-level census data in Canada as well as longitudinal and cross-sectional surveys. SSHRC funded researchers are provided with a facilitated application process. Contact them to learn more.

The MADGIC GIS Data, provided by Spatial and Numeric Data Services, has an extensive list of spatial data related to special points of interest across Canada including administrative boundaries, employment centres, educational facilities, etc.
